What is Homeopathy

Homeopathy – General Information

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy uses natural remedies to stimulate the natural ability we all have to heal ourselves.  A homeopathic remedy is selected to match you as an individual, based not only on your presenting symptoms but your temperament, the situation you are in, your likes and dislikes.  This requires a detailed consultation and leads to an individualised, or what is sometimes called a ‘constitutional’ prescription.

When should I consider trying homeopathy?

Many people prefer natural treatment to conventional drugs or surgery.  Homeopathy can help in all stages of life, from infants to the elderly.  It benefits a wide range of problems and conditions including chronic diseases, recurrent and acute conditions.  Often patients try homeopathy when conventional treatment has failed, has caused side effects, or when there is no other treatment available.  Increasingly patients are choosing homeopathy as a first line treatment rather than as a last resort.  Some illnesses can be treated using homeopathy alone, other patients find that the best results are obtained when used alongside other complementary medicines or where necessary, alongside conventional medical treatments.  This approach of combining the best of the complementary approaches with the necessary conventional treatments is sometimes referred to as ‘integrated medicine’.

Why should I see a homeopathic doctor?

Homeopathic physicians are qualified doctors who have undertaken a postgraduate course  in Homeopathy.

All homeopathic doctors are registered members of the Faculty of Homeopathy (  Dr Owen is the past President of the Faculty.

The Practice has been providing homeopathic advice to patients for over 25 years.

Our homeopathic doctors are familiar with other forms of complementary medicine including nutrition, allergy diagnosis and treatment, herbal treatment and many others that may be successfully integrated in the management of your condition.

Can I use homeopathy alongside other treatments and what would my GP think?

If we think of the job the body has to do to recover from illness as being like repairing a building, the body requires both the building blocks and the right plan in order that healing can take place.  Homeopathy is an excellent way of providing the information plan that the body needs to self heal.  If the body lacks the building blocks then other complementary medicines, particularly nutritional approaches and herbal medicines, are beneficial.  Sometimes, in order for the healing to take place, the body’s symptoms need to be controlled.  Our aim is always to try and get the patient well without on-going medication.  In many cases we work closely with patients’ general practitioners, although if you ask us not to contact your GP we respect your wishes.

Is homeopathic treatment expensive?

Homeopathic consultations require time to develop a clear understanding of what is causing the illness at the deepest level, what homeopathic Physicians refer to as ‘the centre of the case’.  With every patient we analyse the case and plan the best course of treatment.  We can then provide support between appointments as required.  We charge for our advice at a fair price for the professional time you receive.

A number of our patients are reimbursed by private health insurance companies and some general practitioners are able to make NHS referrals; you should discuss this possibility with your GP or with us.

We try to ensure that nobody is denied treatment for financial reasons alone.

Where can I obtain homeopathic remedies?

We stock a range of homeopathic medicines at our dispensary in Winchester and offer  speedy postal service too.

We support patients treating minor ailments at home and first aid and home remedy pack are available to purchase from our dispensary.  While you will sometimes see a limited range of homeopathic remedies in health food shops and chemists, these are usually for minor ailments and patients with more deep-seated illnesses will need a more individualised prescription, as there are several thousand different homeopathic remedies to choose from in many different strengths.

Are remedies safe?

Homeopathic remedies are completely safe even in pregnancy and for young children.

We give detailed instructions on how to take the remedies.  Once the individual has recovered from the illness the treatment can be stopped although occasionally repeat courses might be needed.

Can I use homeopathy just to keep healthy rather than get rid of illness?

Increasingly, patients are looking to homeopathy and other complementary medical systems to maximise their sense of well-being and resistance to illnesses to which they might otherwise be susceptible.

Many people are familiar with the idea of servicing their car but how many seriously think about this in relation to their body?  It is surprising how often we see patients who have been putting up with feeling less than 100% for many years.  Our experience is that if you can treat the condition earlier it will often respond much more easily.

At the Practice we believe that our job is not only to help relieve suffering when patients are ill, but also to use homeopathy and other complementary medicine to ensure you stay healthy and have a positive sense of well-being.
