Bio-identical Hormone Therapy

We can now take care of our hormones.  We age because our hormone levels decline.

This is finally being recognised by doctors exploring the field of hormone replacement therapy. We now have the knowledge and the tools to supplement our hormone levels as we age. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is a revolutionary step forward in the science of healthy ageing. For the first time ever we can directly address the causes of ageing rather than just its symptoms. We can help to slow our body's natural decline and retain more of our energy and vitality. This is all thanks to the development of bespoke blo-identical hormone treatments which more and more patients are turning to. If you are interested in maintaining or rediscovering your youthful vitality, you should consider the benefits of bio-identical hormones.

The relationship between ageing and declining hormone levels

Hormones are chemical messengers that circulate through the blood stream and control every function of our body. We go through a lifecycle of hormonal fluctuations, from puberty to adulthood and beyond. Unfortunately, both men and women experience a drop in these life-sustaining hormones as they age.

As hormone levels decline we lose our energy, strength and vitality. Replenishment of hormones to optimal, physiological levels has been shown to improve many of these unpleasant age related changes, thus enhancing our quality of life.

Symptoms and conditions associated with hormone imbalance and decline

  • Hot flushes
  • Mood swings
  • Weight gain
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of libido
  • Cognitive decline
  • Wrinkling and thinning of the skin
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Arthritis
  • Depression
  • Insulin resistance
  • Insomnia
  • Weakened immune system

Optimising hormone levels using bio-identical hormones has been shown to help treat all of these symptoms and may assist in treating certain conditions in both men and women.

Individual hormone descriptions

ESTROGENS

Estrogens are the most commonly replaced hormones in women, but emerging research suggests that they play an equally important role in men. The Women's Health Initiative (WHI, 2002) study left women feeling scared and vulnerable about estrogens, as they were shown to be associated with an increased cancer risk. However, the WHI study only focused on synthetic estrogens and not their bio-identical equivalents. Bio-identical estrogen perfectly mimics the body's own estrogen and it is important for muscle tone, sex drive and keeping the skin and hair looking healthy. It may also help to prevent a number of degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis, Alzheimer's and heart disease.

PROGESTERONE

In women, progesterone is vital to conception and sustaining pregnancy.

Progesterone is sometimes called the 'happy hormone' because it can greatly improve mood and a sense of well-being. Bio-identical progesterone is calming; it decreases anxiety and depression and helps to reduce mood swings. On the whole, progesterone brings about a sense of peace and tranquillity.

Progesterone is also estrogen's hormone companion, and they work to balance each other during a woman's cycle.

TESTOSTERONE

Testosterone is best known as the hormone that promotes masculine features in men. However, women also produce testosterone and it is very important to many aspects of their health and physiology. In both men and women, testosterone enhances libido, decreases body fat and increases muscle strength. It also maintains bone density and protects against osteoporosis.

THYROID

This metabolic hormone secreted - by the thyroid gland regulates temperature, metabolism and brain function. Thyroid deficiency may result in tiredness, high cholesterol and a higher risk of coronary artery disease. As you age, your metabolism decreases partly as a result of a decrease in thyroid hormone. These symptoms can be prevented by maintaining thyroid levels.

DHEA

DHEA is an important hormone not just because of its own effects but also because it is converted by the body into estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. DHEA is the 'feel good hormone', shown to have a beneficial effect on mood, libido, the immune system and metabolism. DHEA is also a powerful antioxidant and it regulates stress hormones, making DHEA supplementation an important part of healthy ageing.

PREGNENOLONE

For many, mental decline is the most challenging part of ageing. Not only is pregnenolone a precursor to DHEA, it has been shown to maintain memory and improve cognition. Normal pregnenolone levels may be as important to healthy ageing as the other more well-known hormones and many BHRT physicians are now acknowledging its positive effects.

MELATONIN

Studies have shown that melatonin can induce youthful sleep patterns and possibly slow the ageing process. Melatonin normalises sleep patterns and regulates the deep stage of sleep which is very important for stimulating the immune system. Melatonin is also a strong antioxidant.

How are bio-identical hormones different?

For years people have had to choose between the risks of conventional HRT and the hardships of ageing. Now, the introduction of bio-identical hormones promises healthier, happier and well-balanced lives without the side-effects.

Conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is already widely used to treat menopause and other hormone related problems. Unfortunately, conventional HRT uses synthetic hormones which are not identical in molecular structure to those produced by our own bodies. The introduction of these foreign elements has been shown to cause a large number of unwanted side effects and in some cases increases the risk of cancer, stroke and heart disease (WHI, 2002).

Bio-identical hormones are derived from plants and refined to perfectly match the chemical structure of human hormones. The body treats and processes these hormones as if they were its own. As a result, bio-identical hormones are far better tolerated and cause no serious side effects when taken at the correct dose.

How to get started

Balancing, replenishing and adjusting hormones is the art and science of this new specialty of hormone replacement therapy.

Supplementation with blo-identical hormones begins with a thorough investigation of your symptoms and hormone levels. Unlike conventional HRT, BHRT is founded on the principle that each patient is different and requires a unique approach. Your doctor will formulate a hormone supplementation programme that is specifically designed for your needs.

Individualised BHRT medicines are 'compounded' by a qualified pharmacist to include the specific combination of hormones and strengths that the doctor prescribes. These pharmacies work closely with BHRT-prescribing doctors to ensure that patients get the right treatment and care.
