What is Acupuncture?
Dr Ruolin Sun
Acupuncture is an integral part of the rapid growth of complementary therapy within the UK. It has been practised in China for thousand of years and is now practiced throughout the world. Traditionally it is an holistic approach to the management of disease as well as the maintenance of good health and well being. Acupuncture is a system of healing which encourages the body to promote the natural healing and to improve the functioning of the body.
Chinese medicine holds that symptoms of illness show an imbalance in a persons energy, known as "Qi". Qi travels in channels beneath the skin to very deep into the body. Qi consists of equal and opposite qualities Yin and Yang and when these become unbalanced, illness may result.
The principal method of acupuncture treatment is by the insertion of fine metal needles into points lying beneath the skin. By stimulating some of the points, the Qi will begin to flow and certain body functions can be regulated to restore health. There are around 500 acupuncture points across the body and the acupuncturist will use a selection of perhaps ten or twelve of these for each treatment.
Acupuncture can be used in conjunction with conventional medicine and does not interfere with existing drugs therapy.
Long standing chronic types such as arthritis and back pain can benefit from the treatment of Acupuncture as well as other acute pain condition such as sciatica, shoulder, neck, back muscular complaints. Other conditions which can be helped include migraines, sleep and stress disorders, addiction and withdrawl, building up the immunity, cardiovascular, palpitation including high blood pressure and poor circulation and respiratory complaints.
Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is also becoming popular in the UK. It is based on the same Acupuncture principle, which manipulates the body's energy system removing blockages, improving blood circulation or adding energy. This can eliminate fine lines, reduce wrinkles, change the complexion and lessen eye bags as well as firming and tightening the skin.
The response to acupuncture varies from person to person. The frequency of treatments will depend upon the response of the individual. Your initial consultation will be one hour, which will give the acupuncturist the time to assess you individually and to come up with a treatment plan especially for you. Subsequent visits are normally half an hour. Some people notice a significant improvement after the first visit. In others, particularly with chronic conditions that have been present for longer, treatment may take longer
