Coughs, colds and influenza are caused by viral infections and occur when the body’s immune system is weakened. Contributory factors can include a poor diet, exposure to dry, cold, windy weather, becoming chilled after getting wet, stress both physical and emotional or after a shock or fright. A healthy, well functioning immune system is vital to be able to fight off infections such as colds and influenza. Homeopathic treatment can be used to improve the resistance to infection and also speed up the recovery and reduce the onset of catarrh, sinusitis and bronchitis.

Self-help treatments

Colds and Influenza.

Go home and stay away from other people, especially in the first couple of days. Ensure you have plenty of rest and fluids including hot lemon mixed with a little honey. Take extra vitamin C- 500mg twice a day-together with vitamin A and zinc.

Coughs
Humidify the air, do not smoke and avoid dusty areas. Avoid exposure to cold, damp weather. Steam inhalations can be of great benefit.
Ask the advice of your doctor if the overall condition worsens or there are other conditions such as chronic bronchitis, diabetes or heart disease. Remember antibiotics do not cure a viral infection.

Prevention
‘Cold and Flu’ tablets are made up from the viruses causing colds and flu. One tablet morning and night once or twice a month may help prevent infections.

General management
Choose a remedy based on the symptoms as they appear. Use a 6c or 30c potency. For acute conditions give one dose every two hours until improvement. Stop taking the remedy once improvement has appeared and re-start if the symptoms recur. If the chosen remedy does not relieve the symptoms within 24 hours then it is probably not the correct one. Reassess the symptoms and make a further choice
