Acupuncture for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common female endocrine disorder with 20-30% of the UK's female population being affected.  It is strongly associated with hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction and obesity and it is the most common cause of infertility.  Current pharmacological approaches are effective but have adverse side effects.  Many women with PCOS require prolonged treatment therefore, non-pharmacological, natural treatment should be considered.  Clinical data from studies in women with PCOS suggest that acupuncture exerts long lasting beneficial effects on both the metabolic and endocrine systems and on ovulation.

Extensive research has shown that acupuncture treatment may specifically help with the symptoms of PCOS by having a regulatory effect on follicle stimulation hormone (FSH), Luteinising hormone (LH) and modulating the activity of the sympathetic-nervous system.  Acupuncture improves blood flow to the ovaries and down regulates the expressions of serum levels of testosterone.  The most beneficial effect acupuncture seems to have for PCOS suffers is regulating and managing periods.  It has also been shown to aid weight loss, reduces headaches and improves a patient's outlook and mood.  Acupuncture stimulates the organs and improves blood flow to the area, contributing to normalising hormone levels and promoting the proper function of the reproductive system.
